High-Protein Avocado Toast

Avocado toast starts with crisp bread and a soft, lemony avocado layer. Egg, cottage cheese, smoked salmon, white beans or tofu can turn that base into different protein-containing combinations. The amount of protein depends on the bread, topping and quantities you choose; check their labels rather than assigning one nutrition total to every version. These are adjustable preparation methods, not tested nutrition recipes. Dawnjar shows sample records with illustrative figures and CAD prices, and ordering opens at launch.

Basic avocado toast

Gather bread, a ripe avocado, lemon, salt and chilli flakes. Start with enough avocado to make the spread as thick as you prefer. This is a flexible base: the bread size and fruit size will change how much you need. A ripe avocado should mash without needing a liquid sauce, while a firmer one can be sliced instead. Keep the topping ingredients ready so the toast does not sit after spreading.

  1. Toast the bread until the surface is crisp enough to hold a soft topping.
  2. Halve the avocado, remove the stone and scoop the flesh into a bowl.
  3. Mash with a fork, adding a squeeze of lemon and a small pinch of salt; taste before adding more.
  4. Spread onto the toast, scatter chilli flakes if wanted, and add one of the toppings below.

5 higher-protein toppings

Each version adds a protein-containing ingredient to the same avocado base. None has a fixed protein total here: bread, topping brands, recipe amounts and preparation differ. Treat the following combinations as starting methods, and use the exact ingredient labels for any nutrition comparison.

  • Fried or jammy egg — Ingredients: egg, a little cooking oil if frying, pepper and prepared avocado toast. Fry the egg until cooked to your preference, or cook a shell egg using a reliable method, peel and slice. Place on the toast and finish with pepper. Follow appropriate egg preparation guidance rather than treating a soft centre as a food-safety guarantee.

  • Cottage cheese and tomato — Ingredients: cottage cheese, chopped tomato and pepper or herbs. Drain excess tomato liquid, spread cottage cheese over the avocado and add the tomato. Start with a modest layer so it stays on the bread; adjust the amount after checking the texture.

  • Smoked salmon and capers — Ingredients: packaged smoked salmon, capers and optional dill. Follow the salmon package’s storage and ready-to-eat directions. Lay the salmon over the avocado, add drained capers and finish with dill. Taste before adding salt because the toppings bring their own seasoning.

  • Smashed white beans — Ingredients: cooked or canned white beans, lemon and chopped parsley. Drain and rinse canned beans where desired, then mash with lemon until spreadable. Spoon over the avocado and add parsley. Leave some beans whole for contrast rather than making both layers completely smooth.

  • Crispy tofu — Ingredients: firm tofu, a little oil and your chosen seasoning. Drain, pat dry and cut into small pieces. Cook in a pan until the outside is crisp and follow the tofu package’s preparation directions. Let excess surface moisture evaporate before placing the pieces on the toast.

Choosing bread

Choose a slice that can support the topping without folding or falling apart. A broader slice may hold more food, but it also changes the portion being compared. Read protein and fibre per slice alongside slice weight. If one table covers a different number of slices, bring the comparison back to the same portion before deciding what differs.

Seeds, grains and protein wording on the front do not establish the figures for your plate. Toasting changes texture, not which label belongs to the bread. A thin slice can become brittle under a heavy topping, while a very thick slice may leave the middle soft. Adjust the toaster setting and distribute the topping evenly rather than piling it at the centre.

Reading the recipe ingredients

Health Canada says the Nutrition Facts table lists calories plus 12 nutrients per serving, and serving size “isn’t a recommendation of how much to eat”. Read the tables for the bread and packaged toppings at their stated portions; they do not supply the total for this assembled recipe.

Make-ahead tips

Avocado can brown after cutting. Lemon mixed through the mash and a closely covered container can reduce visible browning, but appearance does not establish food safety. Keep prepared avocado refrigerated and follow ingredient storage directions. Make the spread close to serving when practical, especially if you want a bright colour and fresh texture.

For advance preparation, store components separately: bread apart from moist toppings, tomato drained, and chilled ingredients in covered containers. Toast and assemble when you are ready to eat. If carrying the ingredients elsewhere, maintain the required cold storage rather than leaving the assembled toast at room temperature. This guide does not promise a keeping period; follow package dates and storage instructions, and when in doubt do not use the ingredient.

Allergens across the variations

Wheat, eggs, milk, fish, soy and sesame are priority allergens in Canada. Priority allergens must be identified by common name on pre-packaged food labels. Read the bread, each topping, seasoning and any sauce rather than relying on the name of a variation.

Label checklist

  • Bread portion — Check the number of slices and slice weight used in the table.

  • Protein and fibre — Compare these entries at a matching bread portion before considering toppings.

  • Topping ingredients — Read the entire cottage cheese, salmon, bean or tofu recipe, not just its category name.

  • Allergen wording — Check Contains statements and may-contain wording on every packaged ingredient.

  • Storage directions — Keep chilled ingredients under the conditions stated on their own labels.

Before you buy

Plan the variation first so you can choose the bread and topping together. Check the package size, storage instructions and ingredient wording before purchasing elsewhere. Compare CAD cost per slice or topping portion only when the package quantity is clear. A recipe headline is not a verified protein amount or a promise about an ingredient you have not checked.

Questions

How do you make avocado toast?

Toast bread, mash avocado with lemon and salt, then spread it and add your chosen topping. Finish with chilli flakes if wanted and assemble close to serving.

How do I add protein to avocado toast?

Add egg, cottage cheese, smoked salmon, white beans or tofu. Protein depends on the bread, topping and amount; use ingredient labels rather than a universal recipe total.

What bread is best for avocado toast?

Choose bread you enjoy that holds the topping when toasted. Compare protein and fibre per slice while keeping the slice weight and serving size consistent.

How do I keep avocado from browning?

Add lemon and keep the mash closely covered and refrigerated. Lemon can reduce visible browning, but it does not replace storage directions or establish food safety.

Can I make avocado toast ahead?

Prepare ingredients separately and toast and assemble close to serving. Keep perishable toppings refrigerated and follow their labels; this guide guarantees no storage period.

Does Dawnjar sell avocado toast?

No; Dawnjar does not offer avocado toast, and the site is currently a preview. The breakfast references are sample records with illustrative figures and CAD prices; ordering opens at launch.
